Alberta Beekeepers Call For Proposals Guidlines

Recent Research Projects

2008-2009 Projects to date:

 

  1. Support of Maya Evenden's "Development of a pheremone-based program for the red clover casebearer on clover in Alberta".  Alberta Beekeepers has committed $4000 to this project.
  2. Support of Steve Pernal's continued project on "Integrated management of Nosema & Detection of Antibiotic Residues".  Also, this project is diving into whether or not our current use of fumagilin is effective against Nosema Cerranae.   Alberta Beekeepers has committed $20,000 to his project.
  3. Support of Medhat Nasr's "Developing a Pest Management Monitoring System With Effective Control Options For Varroa Mites and Nosema Disease in Honey Bees". Alberta Beekeepers has committed $20,000 for the next three years to this project.

Alberta Beekeepers has committed $44,000 of it’s $50,000 research budget for the 2008-2009 fiscal year.

2007-2008 Research Projects:

  1. Support Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s proposal from Dr. Steve Pernal for the ‘Integrated Management of Nosema & Detection of Antibiotic Residues” in the amount of $20,000.
  2. Support the project from King’s University College by Dr. Grace Greidanus-Strom on the ‘Quantifying the Effects of Garlic Extracts for the Treatment of American Foulbrood’ in the amount of $ 10,000.
  3. Support to Agriculture & Food Council of Alberta for the Saskatraz Project (SK0234C0).  This would not require any financial contribution from Alberta Beekeepers.

2006-2007 Research Projects:

  1. Provincial Apiculturist, Dr. Medhat Nasr, submitted two proposals to the Research Committee.  ‘Phase 11 for Integrated Pest Management for Parasitic Mites Testing Efficacy of New Pesticides and Field Evaluation’ was granted in the amount of $20,000.  This is a two-year project. 
  2. Research approval in the amount of $5,000 was approved for the research on the Effects of Environment on Honey Quality, researcher, Dr. Medhat Nasr.
  3. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Beaverlodge Research Farm, Dr. Stephen Pernal scientist was approved for $10,000 for his continued research project of ‘Management of Honey Bee Diseases Using Lysozyme’, an alternative chemicals to fight American Foul Brood disease.
  4. King’s College, Grace Strom, requested and we also approved to grant funding for the research on ‘Quantifying the Effects of Garlic Extracts for Treatment of America Foul Brood, Part 11’.  This amount is $12,000.

The 2005 Annual General Meeting resolution #8 to ascertain the component parts of hive products and the possible uses of these components for applied purposes which would enhance the value of Alberta hive products’ was put into motion.  The Alberta Crop Industry Development Fund has given us their support by covering the initial cost of $11,500 for “Literature Review of Honey Health Benefits to Determine Research Gaps and New Market Strategies”

Only $47,000 was granted from our budget of $60 000, this leaves us with a balance of $13,000 future research proposals.
